Encompassing an estimated 1,063,000 square miles, the Caribbean Sea, sometimes referred to as the Antillean- Caribbean Sea, touches the coasts of North, Central and South America. The southern portion of the Caribbean Sea grazes the coasts of Columbia, Panama and Venezuela, while in Central America the Caribbean Sea brings life to the coasts of Belize, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico. The northern region of the Caribbean Sea surrounds the islands of Cuba, Greater Antilles, Jamaica and Puerto Rico. Together, the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea form the Central America Sea.
While exploring the the open Caribbean Sea one might spot a whale shark near the Belize Reef, tiger or hammerhead sharks off the coast of the Bahamans, or sea turtles cruising the currents of the Cayman Trench! Right off the coast of Venezuela adventurers will find some of the best scuba diving in Bonaire, which is known for its crystal clear waters and extensive shore-diving opportunities.
