Churchill Downs, the legendary racetrack founded by Meriwether Lewis Clark, Jr., grandson of William Clark of the Lewis and Clark expedition, has been the home of The Kentucky Derby since 1875. The three-year-old chestnut colt Aristides won the first-ever Derby on May 17, 1875, initiating a long-standing tradition that has carried through to today. The Derby, also known as “The Run for the Roses” was nationally telecast for the first time on May 3, 1952. More than 60 years later, a staggering 15.3 million viewers tuned into watch the 140th running of the Kentucky Derby.
